Snog commissions artists to create shop murals

We want our shop to be a place where people can relax, feel positive and be inspired. So it seemed natural that the theme for our shop should be ‘the eternal summer’. The warm and bright interior with its moving cloud ceiling and grass floor are the basis of this theme, but as a changeable feature, the glass walls will become a blank canvas for a series of different artists and illustrators. We love to work with new young talent and it’ll keep our shops fresh, interesting and evolving. The artists will express the theme in their own particular way and that’s what it’s all about. The current colourful flower mural has been created by the Japanese designer and illustrator Akira Chatani. See it in the shop now.

Akira Chatani

Akira Chatani, 29, is a Japanese designer and illustrator who has been living in the UK for the past six years. Working in many styles and mediums, Akira approaches every project with an open mind. His flowers were originally to be based on British wildflower species, but Chatani soon had other ideas; primroses and foxgloves mutated into unique forms with a distinct Japanese twist. The resulting illustrations bring a charming surreal quality to the shop. Akira’s free-spirited approach to work reflects his life, he explains: “I guess my life is fairly unpredictable, always floating and never settling down to one thing or place. I didn’t expect to be an illustrator in London, for example.” Akira’s infuences are diverse; he cites film makers and graphic designers including Michel Gondry, Tibor Kalman and Otl Aicher. He’s also fascinated by different cultures and travels widely. Akira plans to live and work in many countries, “but preferably wherever the weather is good”, he adds.
