Day Two
Day Two at Vauxhall Fashion Scout began with the Ones to Watch showcase for Spring/ Summer 2013 where selected designers Charlotte Simpson, Hana Cha, Hellen van Rees and Ming Pin Tien are helped in launching their design careers.
Charlotte Simpson’s choice of pastel colours in her first collection alongside the use of lightweight materials allowed for an elegant movement to each piece in motion. Embellishments and golden touches featured on most pieces adding a sense of luxury to each piece but allowing the pastel hues to emphasise the gentle shapes created by the fabrics.
Hana Cha’s monochrome collection was softened with loosely fitted dresses, fringing acting with the body’s movement and chiffon pieces drawing attention towards the feminine frame beneath.
Hand crafted weaved cubes and textiles made entirely from recycled materials enhanced the feminine silhouette beneath Hellen Van Rees. Washes of pastel yellows and blues captured the eyes where intricate weaving formed the body.
Armour caging commanded the attention of the audience in Ming Pin Tien’s showcase where rigid jackets and coats covered soft velvets and silks in military shades. Multi layered hems and pleated garments in a number of lengths helped in softening the female embrace of the rigid shell of the overcoats.
Tahir Sultan’s collection embodied glamour throughout featuring architecturally inspired accentuated waists and legs without forgetting the female silhouette.
Geometric patterns with feminine cut shapes formed the collection at Spijkers en Spijkers where silks and light knitwear acted as a gentle canvas to each of the designs. Sharp detailing and delicate lacing complemented the use of bold designs in retro hues.
Well known for her use of leather and silk, Manuela Dack didn’t disappoint in her Spring/ Summer 13 collection. Iridescent shades exposed the movement in the pieces draped against the body whilst leather fringing and weaving skills came to play to create texture through the contrast of shade below the white material.
Melissa Diamantidi played with our perception light as her pieces transitioned from white, to hues of blue through to black. Each piece had a purity exposing the body in transparent silks creating a abstract silhouette.

Day One
Day One at Vauxhall Fashion Scout began with the Graduate Showcase in the presentation space curated by Guy Hipwell founding editor and creative director at Fashion156.com. Eleven graduates exhibited a select collection of their work for the future of fashion in Spring / Summer 2013. We’ve picked a few our favourites, but you can see the full range of talent on the Fashion Scout blog.
Charlotte Helyar’s (top left) hand printed garments with illusionary graphics last seen on 1980′s album covers were displayed on precisely cut modern garments. Perfectly aligned prints helped to direct the illusion of each print throughout the separate pieces creating a seamless canvas. Talented craftwork with the use of ribbons, plastics and sequins by Shengwei Wang (top right) was particularly well received by Hilary Alexander in an interview by the Fashion Scout team, where she regarded Wang’s work as “absolutely gorgeous”. The Central Saint Martins graduate Aisling Farrell (bottom left) created ‘static’ pieces using a combination of PVC, polythene and feathers to form movement in motion, innovatively using polythene balls within fabric. A structural approach to design was seen on display by Serena Gili using metallic solid skirts with bibs decorated to complement the skilled dedication shown in Gili’s pieces.
Dans La Vie’s ‘Moving Print Bodies’ garments were aptly named created from a range of materials including those printed with reptile skins highlighted with accent colours of red, green and blue, in feminine enhancing cuts.
Pastel tones of lilac and coral highlighted with whites focused attention on the structured shoulders, high waists and length of trousers throughout Krystof Strozyna’s collection. Lightweight materials helped to soften occasional masculine fits with cut outs and fine print work adorning other pieces.
